Newborn sessions are my favourite. Tiny toes, cute little nose, those adorable expressions. Every baby is different therefore as a newborn photographer we have to remember there is no one and fix rule for all.
From the time baby arrives at the studio to the creative clicks - I find every baby takes some time to get comfortably settled for getting their pictures taken. Similar goes true for the accompanying parents. Some of them are more than happy to be a part of the helping process during the entire shoot and some rely on the photographer to use her creativity and handling skills independently.
Soft natural or indirect light are the best to get that perfect baby skin tone. It is very easy to overexpose the pictures with direct flash or harsher light.
Two of my favorite lenses are 24-70mm and a 100mm macro. Theses are a must for me that allows the flexibility to work in a space of any size, fit in a family comfortably within the camera frame as well get some detailed shots. I cannot think one without the other during my newborn photo sessions.
I find informing the parents what to expect during the photosession makes them more confident and helps to have a conversation more freely to talk about their expectations from the photographer. I always remind the new parents that its ok if their baby is sleeping or awake during the photoshoot. It is easier on the baby as well as the photographer to get those cute epic shots. For a 90 minute session expect the baby to be awake and sleeping therefore dont sweat that you will miss taking pictures of any of those.
Two feedings, two diaper changes are very common for a 90 minute newborn session. Having a pacifier helps to sooth the baby. Soft music or lullabies are my other tools that I dont forget to use if needed. But the most important things to remember is safety for the baby and providing a comfortable and joyful experience for the new parents.
My experience as a newborn photographer is an evolving chapter as I continue to learn more from each baby. Every baby helps me to learn something new that can compliment my journey as a photographer!
